he most current iteration of full-service firm Philippi Prietocarrizosa Ferrero DU & Uría, or PPU, was formed in 2015 from the merger between Chilean firms Philippi, Yrarrázaval, Pulido & Brunner, Colombian firm Prietocarrizosa and Peruvian firms Ferrero Abogados and Delmar Ugarte. The Ibero-American firm maintains offices in Chile, Colombia and Peru, with additional offices in Spain, Portugal, New York, London and Brussels thanks to its partnership with Spanish and Portuguese firm Uría Menéndez. The firm is also part of the SCG Legal and World Law Group networks. In Peru, the firm has one office located in Lima. The office is best known for its work in debt capital markets and project development and financing.

Though PPU is most well-known for its capital markets and projects work, it also has notable M&A and banking practices.  

In M&A, the firm acts on behalf of buyers and sellers in acquisitions across numerous industries. It also works on strategic investments and joint ventures.  

In project development, the firm represents developers and concessionaires in projects in the energy, power, infrastructure and mining industries. The group has experience working with public and private projects.  

The firm also has a notable restructuring and insolvency practice, where the team represents debtors and creditors in out of court, cross border and domestic insolvency proceedings.

Key clients for the firm include BHP, IDB Invest, Grupo BVL, Bolsa de Comercio de Santiago, Bolsa de Valores de Colombia and China Civil Engineering Construction.  

   

Research period review: 33rd edition (2022/2023)   

Throughout the research period, the firm was active in banking and finance, equity capital markets, M&A, project development and restructuring and insolvency.   

In banking, the firm advised guarantors and borrowers in cross-border financing transactions involving international financial development institutions.  

The capital markets team worked on hallmark transactions involving multiple stock exchanges and also advised on complex bond issuances for the financing of projects and fund raising.  

The firm’s M&A department represented private equity firms and pension funds in private acquisitions. It also advised on public acquisitions in the pharmaceutical and agriculture sectors.  

The project development team was active in airport concessions and PPPs, oil pipeline projects, wastewater projects and highways. The firm also advised on the financing of projects.  

In restructuring and insolvency, the firm advised clients on controversial cross-border restructurings and bankruptcy proceedings, primarily in the infrastructure and real estate sectors.  

Over the research period, partner Ignacio Lopez de Romaña departed from the firm’s banking and finance department to join Dentons. Partner Javier Ezeta also departed from the firm during this period
