Founded in 1897 and one of the country’s oldest firms, Beccar Varela is a full service firm well-known in the Argentine market, especially for its top tier M&A practice. Horacio Beccar Varela serves as the managing partner of the firm, which has two offices in Buenos Aires. It is part of numerous international networks, and is a founding member of the Club de Abogados Iberoamérica. The firm’s international presence is helped by a German desk and the ability to communicate with clients in Spanish, English, French, German, Italian and Portuguese. The firm only practices Argentinian law.

Although best known for M&A, the firm also does great work in banking and capital markets. The banking team mostly works on the lender side but is known to also advise borrowers. Because of the firm’s strong relationship with banks, it advises more underwriters in the capital markets practice area than issuers. The M&A team mostly advises buyers but will also advise sellers. All the firm’s team do a lot of work in the agribusiness, energy and oil and gas sectors. 

Key clients that the M&A team advise include Prisma Medios de Pago, YPF Ventures, Telemundo, Unilever and WeWork. The banking and finance team’s key clients include Banco de Galicia y Buenos Aires, Coöperatieve Rabobank, Citibank, HSBC Bank, Banco Santander, Morgan Stanley and PNC Bank. 

Over the research period the banking team advised a number of developers for renewable energy project financings. The capital markets team mostly worked for underwriters and issuers on debt transactions in the oil and gas industry. The M&A team worked across all industries, with an emphasis on oil and gas and agribusiness transactions, where they mostly represented strategic buyers. 

In 2019, the firm launched a fintech practice, which is becoming increasingly active.
