Overview:

  • Karot 720MW hydroelectric power plant.
  • The Private Power and Infrastructure Board, on behalf of the Pakistan government, and Karot Power Company have signed the implementation agreement for the development and operation of a 720MW hydropower project.
  • The project is valued at $1.69 billion.
  • The project represents one of the three multi-stage hydropower projects in Pakistan being developed by China Three Gorges South Asia Investment, an independent power company owned by China Three Gorges Corporation, the IFC and the Silk Road Fund.
  • The plant is expected to commence commercial operation by 2021.
  • The project is listed as one of the priority projects of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor under China's 'one belt one road' investment strategy.
  • The Export-Import Bank of China, China Development Bank, Silk Road Fund and the IFC acted as the lenders on the project financing.
