Overview:

  • Austrian-based Kapsch CarrierCom—a producer, supplier and systems integrator of end-to-end telematics and telecommunications solutions—and Algerian railways operator Société Nationale des Transports Ferroviaires (SNTF) have entered a contract for the joint venture Rail-Telecom.
  • Rail-Telecom will be under joint ownership of SNTF (51%) and Kapsch CarrierCom (49%) as shareholding partners.
  • The main goals of the partnership are to establish railway telecommunications know-how in Algeria; to educate, train and supervise local experts, and build, supply and maintain the Algerian railway network with state-of-the-art telecommunication technology.
  • Kapsch has been the strategic supplier of Algerian railways for the GSM-R network and transmission backbone for more than nine years.
  • The development forms part of Algeria’s $26.7 billion infrastructure project to expand and modernise the railway network.
