Overview:

  • KTDA Power Company borrowed $55 million from the International Finance Corporation, alongside the Global Agriculture and Food Security Programme, the French Development Institution (Proparco), and the Netherlands Development Finance Company, to fund hydro plants that will generate renewable energy for tea production facilities.
  • Kirinyaga Power Company, Greater Meru Tea Power Company, Settet Power Generation Company and the Nyakwana Power Company acted as co-borrowers. 
  • The hydro plants should generate 22MW of electricity. 
  • The surplus of energy generated will be sold to the national grid.
