Overview:

  • In September 2008, investment banking company Lehman Brothers filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
  • With assets over $600 billion, the bankruptcy is the largest filing in US history.
  • British multinational bank Barclays acquired Lehman Brothers North American business for $1.75 billion, while Nomura, a global investment bank, acquired the European and Asian arm of the distressed company.
  • In September 2018, the liquidation of Lehman Brothers has continued.
  • By the end of 2018, customers and secured creditors were repaid in full while unsecured creditors received about $9 billion.
