Overview:

  • The Republic of Chile has issued $1.41 billion 3.5% green bonds due 2050.
  • This makes Chile the first country in Latin America to issue sovereign green bonds.
  • The country plans to use the proceeds of the offer to repurchase old bonds and to invest in "eligible green expenditures." 
  • These expenditures may include renewable energy, clean transportation, green buildings, water management, energy efficiency and land use and marine protected areas. 
  • BNP Paribas, Citigroup and HSBC acted as underwriters.
