One of Uganda's top lawyers has left AF Mpanga, the Ugandan affiliate of South African firm Bowman Gilfillan, to set up a boutique.

IFLR1000 Leading Lawyer Julius Mukumbya Musoke has established Mukumbya Musoke Advocates a boutique that will focus on projects, including financing, development and related M&A across all sectors but with a particular focus on energy and infrastructure.

In an interview with IFLR1000, Musoke highlighted two reasons behind his decision to form the new firm. The first being a desire to provide a more specialised service to his clients, the second to provide a place for young, talented professionals to work in the country, something he says is currently rare.

Speaking on the current legal market in Uganda, Musoke highlights a growing trend toward internationalisation: "The market is fluid, a number of foreign firms are affiliating with the local ones here. I believe that there is room for more independant firms. The conflict that we have is with European and South African firms coming here and competing with each other, but there is still room for good, high quality independent firms."

Before his tenure at AF Mpanga, Musoke worked at the African Development Bank for close to nine years, and has experience in projects in over 20 African nations.
