Data Analyst Katrin Kostadinova highlights the most significant financial and corporate legal deals announced or closed in the last week.

Americas

Starting with a Canadian deal - Alberta Investment Management Corp (AIMco) has invested $1.6 billion investment insPower. AES Corp has entered into a joint venture with AIMCo for the purchase. Around 250,000 homes will be powered by clean energy, which will reduce carbon pollution by three million tons per year.

Moving on to Chile, Corporación Nacional del Cobre de Chile has issued $1.5 billion senior notes. The 3.625% notes are due 2027. The company has also issued $1.25 billion of 4.5% notes due 2047.

Several major deals have taken place in the United States this week. Discovery Communications has acquired Scripps Network Interactive for $14.6 billion. Through the acquisition Discovery will extend its control to the United Kingdom.

Genesis Energy has taken over Tronox’s alkali business for $1.3 billion – a deal financed through convertible preferred units issue. Tronox is the largest producer of natural soda ash in the world and produces 28% of the world’s output.

Another major acquisition - Walgreens Boots Alliance and KKR took over PharMerica for $1.4 billion. PharMerica is a leading pharmacy services provider with 96 institutional pharmacies. Walgreens will be a minority investor in the company and the deal will take PharMerica private.

LabCorp, a health care diagnostics company, has acquired Chiltern for $1.2 billion. After the acquisition LabCorp will become a leading contract research organization with more than 20,000 employees and leading diagnostics and drug development businesses.

Asia-Pacific

Astro Japan Property Trust Japanese real estate assets have been acquired by Blackstone for A$1.1 billion. Astro is listed on the ASX and its main focus is the Japanese real estate market, while Blackstone is an American multinational private equity, asset management and financial services firm.

I Squared Capital has acquired Hutchison Global Communications in Hong Kong for $1.86 billion. The deal is still subject to shareholders’ approval. HGC offers telecommunication services with three major hubs in Hong Kong, Los Angeles and London. As I Squared Capital usually invests in transport, energy and utilities, this acquisition is the first telecommunications investment for the company.

Flipkart, the largest online retailer in India, has acquired eBay India as part of a wider investment drive. The company has secured $1.4 billion in investment from eBay Singapore, Microsoft and Tencent in April 2017. Another $2 billion will be invested by Softbank Vision Fund.

Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA)

In Italy ViViBanca has undertaken a €265 million securitisation of personal loans. The issued securities were listed on the Luxembourg Stock Exchange.
