Edgar Romo, a former partner at Bufete Robles Miaja, has joined DLA Piper Gallastegui & Lozano, the combination of Mexican firm Gallastegui & Lozano and global firm DLA Piper.

“Edgar’s talents will be in high demand as direct foreign investment into Mexico continues to accelerate,” said Eduardo Gallastegui, managing partner of the G&L Mexico City office said in a statement. “Leveraging DLA Piper’s global platform, Edgar will bring to bear deep experience and a breadth of practice areas to US, international and Mexican clients who are navigating changes to the local market.”

Romo focuses his practice on M&A, joint ventures, banking and finance. His include private equity funds, financial institutions, investment banks and real estate developers.

Romo said that global platform of DLA Piper and its expansion plans for Latin America played a role in his decision to move there.

In an interview with IFLR1000, Romo discussed trends he foresaw in Mexico’s financial market. “Given volatility in equity markets, I think financial sponsors such as private equity firms will boost global transactions. There is uninvested capital that private equity firms are looking to deploy in various markets, and Mexico is well-suited for such capital investments. So, private equity will be very interesting and important for the Mexican market and this will also boost strategic cross-border M&A transactions.”

“It’s a very interesting time in the Mexican legal market, the presence of global law firms in Mexico is a reality and they are here to stay. The Mexican market has changed, and it is definitely a very exciting and challenging time to practice law in Mexico,” Romo added.
