Qays has been practising law in Bahrain since 1981. He also holds BA at Duke University and BA/MA at Cambridge University. He is a certified arbitrator at the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) Commercial Arbitration Centre and a licensed lawyer and legal consultant in Bahrain and in Dubai, UAE.

Qays was the executive resident partner of White & Case LLP, Bahrain. For a period thereafter following his departure from White & Case, Qays’ firm was associated with Clifford Chance. Today, the Firm is independent.

Qays has advised major financial institutions, multinational corporations and private clients in Bahrain and the GCC on a wide range of local, regional and international legal matters. He has extensive experience advising clients doing business in Bahrain and in other Gulf countries. He advised clients in a litigation case in the USA and the UK, and is advised local clients with respect to their assets in France and Azerbaijan.

  • Represented an Islamic retail bank based in Bahrain in relation to a voluntary offer made by one of another Bahraini Islamic bank in Bahrain to acquire up to 100% shares of the Islamic retail bank
  • Represented and advised the lenders of the successful bidder, a British-Emirati-Japanese consortium, in its bid for the development and operation of the Muharraq Sewage Treatment Plant in Bahrain.
  • Represented the lender in relation to a US$ 250 million bilateral facility to a Bahraini branch of an Indian bank.
  • Represented the lender syndicate in relation to a US$ 300 million facility to a Bahraini branch of an Indian bank.
  • Represented a renowned Bahraini investment bank in the establishment of US$200 million Shariah-compliant private equity
  • fund aimed at investments in the retail sector in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
  • Represented a renowned Bahraini investment bank in the establishment of US$200 million private equity fund aimed at investments in the MENA region.
  • Representing a major construction company in the ad-hoc arbitration proceedings against a developer of a renowned residential development in Bahrain for a claim of US$60 million (approximately).
  • Represented a major Japanese financial institution in the acquisition of approx. 25% stake in a major insurance company in Bahrain.
  • Represented the buyers in relation to the acquisition of an aluminium rolling factory in Bahrain in an all-cash deal.
  • Represented the Korean-Canadian-Kuwaiti consortium in respect of the Bahrain LNG Import Terminal project to be developed on a Build Own Operate Transfer basis.
  • Acted for one of Iraq’s largest bank in a case against an international bank in order to recover the deposit amount of BHD 27,835,255.490. A judgment was obtained in our Client’s favour.
