Overview:

  • The Woolgoolga to Ballina project will upgrade about 155 km of highway—the project starts approximately six km north of Woolgoolga and ends approximately six km south of Ballina.
  • It is Australia's largest regional infrastructure project and when completed it will reduce overall length from 180 km to 167 km; allow for a higher posted speed limit of up to 110 km/h; reduce travel time from 130 minutes to about 105 minutes; reduce crash rates by 27% due to divided carriageways; and improve travel reliability. 
  • Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) is utilising the delivery partner procurement model for this project, which is the first time this model has been implemented to deliver such a project in Australia.
