Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan has hired an experienced intellectual property trial lawyer who previously worked in the Palo Alto office of Mayer Brown.

Jay Neukom is now a partner in Quinn Emanuel’s San Francisco office, where he will work on patent, licensing, and trademark cases. His current caseload includes a patent dispute between Apple and smart phone maker HTC that is bound for an investigative hearing before the International Trade Commission in August. “In the parlance of the ITC, it’s a hearing. In the ITC, you don’t get a jury trial, it’s not a case the way it is in federal district court,” Neukom noted.

Neukom’s move should not be taken as a comment about Mayer Brown, he explained. “I think the world of Mayer Brown, it’s a nice place to work, they’ve got a top shelf product. The Palo Alto office was an exciting place to be a litigator,” Neukom said.

Like other lawyers throughout the industry, Neukom had been paying attention to cases that Quinn Emanuel was taking to trial. When the firm called him, it represented an opportunity too good to pass up.

“Folks are running trial teams here that are the envy of the market. I don’t think anybody is getting the sheer volume of high-stakes IP disputes that Quinn Emanuel is getting, especially those that are highly likely to go to trial,” Neukom commented.
