Greenberg in Pole position as Dewey lawyers jump ship

15 May 2012

Greenberg Traurig has launched its first office in Eastern Europe and its 35th worldwide with the acquisition of a 50 lawyer team from stricken US rival Dewey & LeBouef in Poland.

The Warsaw office will operate under the name of Greenberg Traurig Grzesiak with Dewey’s former Warsaw managing partner Jaroslaw Grzesiak taking the helm.

Additionally, Lejb Fogelman (pictured) joins the firm as senior partner along with corporate partners Andrzej Wysokinski and Ireneusz Matusielanski.

“Our office was approached by many of the highest quality firms in Europe and the U.S. We chose Greenberg Traurig because we share many of the same values - quality, strength, spirit and clarity of vision. We feel that we have a recipe for success and are excited about what this venture will bring to our collective clients worldwide,” said Grzesiak.

Over the last 20 years, Dewey’s highly regarded Warsaw office established itself with prominence on the Polish legal market. This is especially so with regard to the equity capital markets, M&A and private equity. Recent stand out mandates include advice to Raiffeisen bank on a $490 million acquistion of a stake in Polbank and a €938 million acquistion of shares in Telewizja Polsat by Cyfrowy Polsat.

In a recent press release, Greenberg Traurig’s Chief Executive Officer Richard Rosenbaum said: “This team has been successful in Poland for two decades, is integral to the Warsaw business and legal communities, and is exactly such an opportunity in one of the most important and successful European markets, where entrepreneurship in the private sector is highly valued and supported with policies that focus on growth.”
