Chinese firm Fangda Partners has hired a partner from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer as it prepares to launch a new office in Hong Kong in June 2012.

Litigator Peter Yuen will join the firm to head up the new operation on the island. he focuses on commercial disputes including regulatory, corporate compliance, banking and IP matters. he is dual-qualified in England & Wales and Hong Kong.

The move marks the second departure from Freshfields Asian operations in a week following the move of corporate partner Carl Cheng to Zhong Lun a few days ago (April 2012).

Fangda is the latest Chinese firm to make the move to Hong Kong and the new office will represent the firm's first launch outside of China. It will become the 14th PRC firm to open on the island.

The move of Yuen also marks a set back for Freshfields after a recent flurry of activity at the firm focused on boosting its Asian litigation capacity. In the recent election round, Hong Kong based Georgia Dawson was made up to partner and the team was further bolstered by the relocations of partners Lucy Reed and Geoff Nicholas.
