Led by Matthew Cottis, with the acquisition finance team headed up by Penny Angell, the banking team at Hogan Lovells has a broad practice both in terms of transactional scope and number of lawyers. Chris McLaughlin and David Leggott were both promoted to the partnership last year, which brings the team headcount to 21. The firm also added asset finance capacity from Linklaters in the forms of Robert Fugard and Simon Gwynne.
Nevertheless the firm did have to cope with the loss of Mark Donald who moved across to Weil Gotshal & Manges. While this is slight blow to the firm, a broad bench is one of its strengths and in capacity at least the practice is unlikely to be affected.
A balance of bank and corporate clients is reflected in the firm's transactional focus, which is strongest in trade, asset and acquisition finance.
Deals
On the acquisition finance side, Matthew Cottis and Chris McLaughlin acted for Commerzbank, ING and Raiffesen Bank on the debt financing for Montagu Private Equity's bid for Polish broadcaster TP Emitel. In a similar deal the team acted for Lloyd TSB on the financing for the acquisition of the Guardian Assurance Group by Cinven.
Other bank side work saw Andrew Gamble act for Deutsche Bank on the €400 million refinancing facility provided to three steel companies in the SIFSA Group. Paul McLoughlin was also active acting in conjunction with the firm's Amsterdam, Paris and Frankfurt offices on the €1.1 billion cross border refinancing of facilities provided to DUKE Real Estate.

David Hudd heads up the wider finance team at Hogan Lovells, with Kit Johnson and Peter Kohl also active partners in the department. Since the merger between legacy firms Lovells and Hogan & Hartson the firm has been able to offer a more rounded offering in both English and US law. This is reflected in the firm’s transaction list, which includes work on US issues under Rule 144A and high-yield bond matters.
Deals
One of the firm’s biggest transactions last year saw Peter Kohl act for SABMiller on a $7 billion offering under Rule 144A. The funds were used to refinance the acquisition finance used by the group for the takeover of Fosters.
The firm has always maintained a strong Africa practice and this was demonstrated by Andrew Carey’s (now based in Singapore) work for The African Export-Import Bank and Dinosaur Securities on a $50 million 8.5% bond issue, the first issue of the post-Zimbabwe dollar era.
The Bank of New York Mellon has been an active client of the firm and in April 2011 called in the team to advise it as trustee in regard to a €215 million bond issue to finance the O2 Arena in Prague.
