As one of the largest law firms in the Bahamas, Higgs & Johnson is well regarded by competitors, with one noting that the firm is a "major player" in the jurisdiction. The firm has substantial experience on Bahamian aspects of a wide array of financing projects and M&A transactions, representing clients ranging from real estate developers to utility companies.

Deals
Over the last 12 months, Higgs & Johnson's commercial department, led by Surinder Deal, has been active in several financings and M&A transactions. On one such deal, the team acted for the largest single investor on a $40 million investment in resort redevelopment project. The transaction is expected to help boost the economy on the island where the resort is located. The team also recently advised the subsidiary of an international oil company on the $20 million disposal of its wholesale and retail operations in the Bahamas. As a result of this transaction, a French-owned entity will be selling petroleum and petroleum-based products in the country for the first time.

In capital markets, Higgs & Johnson advised the Bahamian branch of a Brazilian bank on the revisions and current offering of a tranche of its $4 billion global MTN program. The transaction was closed in October 2011.

The Cayman office of Higgs & Johnson, a full-service corporate and commercial firm, has a particular strength in corporate restructuring and commercial agreements.

In July 2012, Oscar N. Johnson Jr. was appointed as the new managing partner of the firm. Prior to that, Sarah Bolton, who has worked as counsel at Appleby and Ogier in Cayman, joined Higgs & Johnson as head of the investment funds team in Cayman.

Deals
Under partner Chris Narborough, who heads the commercial division, Higgs & Johnson advised a publicly listed international company on the transfer of its Cayman business to a third party purchaser. The firm also acted for an international technology group on the listing of two Eurobonds on the Cayman Islands Stock Exchange for two non-Cayman companies within the group.

In addition, the firm represented Cayman investment funds in relation to launching a segregated portfolio as an SPC investing into real estate in South East Asia.
