Although Cheang & Ariff is best known for its strong litigation practice, its banking and project finance area is recognised throughout the market. "While we consider them primarily a litigation firm, we see Cheang & Ariff acting for lenders," says a peer.
Partner Loy Tuan Bee heads the firm's banking and finance practice, but partner Adriel Lau Jin Son has been especially active this year on the banking front, advising Malayan Banking and Hong Leong Bank, among others.

Partner Adriel Lau Jin Son had a busy year acting for lenders, representing Hong Leong Bank and RHB Bank in the grant of club deal facilities for working capital and to partly finance the development costs of an oil palm plantation and construction of a palm oil mill in Indonesia. She also represented Affin Investment Bank regarding banking facilities to redeem a borrower's indebtedness under a collateralised loan obligation programme.

Head of the firm's corporate and commercial practice and partner Tan Ming Li advised Century Software Holdings last year on its IPO on the main market of the Bursa Malaysia. Tan also worked on the setting up of the Malaysian Life Sciences Capital Fund II and the issue of a private placement memorandum for the fund to raise $250 million.
Tan also worked with partner Adriel Lau Jin Son to represent SP Setia in its proposed placement of new ordinary shares, representing up to 15% of the issued and paid-up share capital of the company.

This year Yeat Soo Ching represented Lane Management and Ong Leong Huat at Wong Joo Hwa in their takeover of remaining ordinary shares and warrants of OSK Property Holdings. Partner Chong Wei Lung also represented Swift Redeem in its takeover of Pulai Springs.
Corporate head Tan Ming Li and Adriel Lau Jin Son also advised SP Setia in its March 2012 mandatory general offer for its own shares.
