As one of the older and more established law firms in Indonesia, Lubis Ganie Surowidjojo (LGS) undertakes work for top Indonesian and foreign companies as well as government agencies. The firm provides commercial and corporate work and is well known for its restructuring and insolvency work and its litigation practice.
"They have a very good litigation practice and Mohamed Idwan (Kiki) Ganie is the stand-out lawyer," says one rival. Their work for various government agencies positions them well for infrastructure projects. "They do a lot of work for the government and that means they are good at project finance, particularly infrastructure projects. Abdul Haris is the leading lawyer there," comments another peer.
Deals
The firm represented numerous bondholders in one of Indonesia's largest insolvency cases in 2011 that of Arpeni Pratama Ocean Line. The case involved the suspension of debt repayment sought by one of its many creditors for the total principal amount of $140 million. The firm acted on behalf of ten individual bondholders, which consisted of banks and financial institutions which presented some challenges as each individual group of bondholders has different interests at stake.
In a similar deal the firm represented Credit Suisse International and JPMorgan Europe as creditors in relation to the suspension of the debt repayment proceedings of Kertas Nusantara. The debtor is one of the biggest paper companies in Indonesia.

The firm has played important roles in a number of transportation projects, particularly toll roads, and projects involving state-owned enterprises enabling them to provide practical advice to clients.
Deals
In one of the most significant power project deals under the Government's second 10,000MW Fast Track Program, Lubis advised the Fiscal Policy Office of the Ministry of Finance in the drafting of the Business Viability Guarantee to be provided to state electricity company PLN for the Muaralaboh and Rajabasa projects. These two geothermal power projects under the second Fast Track Program will serve as the blueprint for future projects.
In another deal the team advised the Ministry of Finance and the Indonesia Infrastructure Guarantee Fund (IIGF) as guarantors for the central Java power plant project. It was one of the first PPP (public-private partnerships) projects under the recently enacted PPP supporting legal and regulatory framework. Under the agreement, just over $30 million was guaranteed by the guarantors.
